Cool room builders on the Sunshine Coast

PJ Refrigeration and Airconditioning designs, builds and installs commercial cool rooms and freezer rooms for businesses across the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. From our Moffat Beach workshop we handle the full job — insulated panel construction, refrigeration equipment, electrical commissioning and ongoing servicing — so there is never a gap between the builder and the service tech.

Because we are licensed refrigeration mechanics as well as installers, we take responsibility for the part of a cool room that actually keeps it cold: the refrigeration system. We size the compressor, evaporator and condenser to your heat load, seal every panel join for Queensland humidity, and commission the room to hold set point within tight tolerances.

We can build a cool room from the ground up, install refrigeration into an existing room, or service and repair a cool room that is already in place. Where a build needs carpentry, electrical or fit-out work outside refrigeration, we work alongside your builder or other trades to get the job done.

What we build

From design to commissioning

Every cool room we build is engineered around your space, your stock and your target temperature — not a catalogue size.

Custom cool room design

Every cool room is designed around your floor plan, door access, stock turnover and target temperature — no off-the-shelf compromises.

Cool room construction

Insulated panel walls, ceilings and floors built and sealed on-site or pre-fabricated in our Moffat Beach workshop and delivered.

Cool room installation

Full installation including panel assembly, doors, lighting, drains and refrigeration pipework — commissioned and performance-tested.

Refrigeration equipment

Correctly sized compressors, evaporators and condensers selected for your heat load, ambient conditions and run-time efficiency.

Temperature-controlled storage

Stable, even cooling for food, beverage, floral, pharmaceutical and produce storage that holds set point within tight tolerances.

Commercial cool rooms & freezer rooms

Walk-in cool rooms (chill) and freezer rooms (sub-zero) with thicker insulated panels and defrost systems for deep-freeze duty.

Refrigeration equipment: evaporators, condensers & controls

A cool room is only as reliable as its refrigeration. We select and install the full refrigeration circuit — the indoor evaporator unit that pulls heat out of the room, the outdoor condenser unit that rejects it, the compressor that drives the cycle, and the electronic controller that holds your set point.

For commercial cool rooms we size the evaporator to the internal heat load (product, door openings, lights, fans and infiltration) and the condenser to Queensland's ambient conditions, so the system pulls down quickly and runs efficiently rather than short-cycling. Freezer rooms get a correctly programmed defrost cycle and a heated door frame to stop ice build-up. Every room can be paired with 24/7 temperature monitoring and alarms so your stock is protected after hours.

Who needs a cool room

Commercial cool rooms for every food business

We build temperature-controlled storage for the Sunshine Coast businesses that can't afford a cold-chain failure.

Restaurants & cafes

Walk-in cool rooms and chill rooms that keep fresh produce, dairy and prep ingredients at safe food-storage temperatures.

Hospitality venues

Pubs, clubs, function centres and hotels needing reliable cold storage for busy service periods and stock control.

Supermarkets & food businesses

Butchers, bakeries, greengrocers and wholesalers needing multi-temperature storage, display backup and high-turnover access.

Food manufacturing & storage

Process rooms, blast chill and batch cooling for food manufacturers, caterers and cold-chain logistics operators.

Existing cool rooms: upgrades, repairs & maintenance

You don't need a new build to work with us. If your existing cool room or freezer room is undersized, running hot, icing up or has failed refrigeration, we can re-engineer and install a replacement refrigeration system into your current panels and get it back to set point. For new builds, see our cold room construction page.

We also carry out preventative maintenance, door and seal repairs, refrigerant leak repairs, compressor replacement, controller upgrades and temperature-alarm setup for cool rooms across the Sunshine Coast. Regular servicing protects your stock, keeps energy costs down and extends the life of the plant.

Working with other trades and builders: where a fit-out needs carpentry, electrical, plumbing or building work outside refrigeration, we coordinate with your builder or other trades and focus on what we do best — the cool room and the refrigeration that runs it.

Decades of refrigeration experience

The experience behind every cool room we build

We don't just build cool rooms — we've serviced refrigeration systems protecting approximately $230 million in pharmaceutical product and approximately $10 million in food for remote Far North Queensland communities. That experience informs every cool room we design.

FAQ

Cool room questions, answered

How much does a cool room cost?

A small commercial cool room typically starts from around $8,000–$15,000 installed, mid-sized walk-in cool rooms range from roughly $15,000–$35,000, and large or freezer-room builds can exceed that depending on size, panel thickness, door type and the refrigeration system required. We provide a fixed, itemised quote after a site measure so you know exactly what you are paying for.

What size cool room do I need?

Size depends on your stock volume, how often the door opens, your delivery frequency and the space available on site. As a guide, allow enough room for shelving, walkway access and 10–20% growth headroom. We help you calculate the right internal volume during the design stage so you don't overspend on space you won't use.

What refrigeration system is required?

The refrigeration system is sized to the heat load — the volume of the room, the target temperature, the product you are pulling down, door openings, ambient Queensland conditions and any lighting or equipment heat. We match a compressor, evaporator and condenser set to that load so the room pulls down quickly and holds temperature efficiently without short-cycling.

What is the difference between a cool room and a freezer room?

A cool room (chill room) typically operates between +1°C and +4°C for fresh food storage. A freezer room operates at -18°C or colder for frozen storage. Freezer rooms use thicker insulated panels (commonly 100–150mm vs 75–100mm for cool rooms), a defrost cycle on the evaporator, and a heated door frame to prevent ice build-up around the door seal.

How long does cool room installation take?

A standard walk-in cool room can be installed in 2–4 days once panels and equipment are on site. Larger builds, freezer rooms or rooms that require electrical and plumbing works run longer. We give you a clear timeline with your quote and coordinate with your other trades so the install fits your opening schedule.

What temperature should a cool room operate at?

For general food storage a cool room should run at +1°C to +4°C. Fresh meat and dairy sit at the colder end of that range, while fruit and vegetables are often stored slightly warmer at +4°C to +7°C with humidity control. Freezer rooms run at -18°C or colder. We set and verify the control points during commissioning to meet food-safety standards.

Can PJ Refrigeration and Airconditioning build a custom cool room?

Yes. Every cool room we build is custom-designed around your floor plan, stock and target temperature — there are no off-the-shelf sizes. We handle the insulated panel construction, doors, refrigeration equipment, electrical commissioning and ongoing servicing in-house, so one team takes responsibility for the complete build from design through to handover.

Can PJ Refrigeration and Airconditioning install refrigeration into an existing cool room?

Yes. If you already have an insulated cool room or freezer room and the refrigeration has failed, is undersized or needs upgrading, we can supply and install a new refrigeration system — evaporator, condenser, pipework and controls — and commission it to the room's requirements without rebuilding the panels.

Can PJ Refrigeration and Airconditioning service and repair existing cool rooms?

Yes. We service, repair and upgrade existing cool rooms and freezer rooms across the Sunshine Coast — refrigeration faults, refrigerant leaks, compressor replacement, door seals, defrost issues, controller faults and temperature-alarm setup. See our cold room maintenance and cold room door repairs pages, or call 0448 773 739.

What businesses need commercial cool rooms?

Restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs, hotels, butchers, bakeries, greengrocers, supermarkets, florists, breweries, food manufacturers, caterers, pharmacies and cold-chain distributors all rely on commercial cool rooms or freezer rooms to meet food-safety and storage requirements.
